The Native Daughters of the Golden West helped the kids at Richmond School celebrate California’s Admission Day on Tuesday with two new flags to be flown at the entrance to the campus on Richmond Road.
The day marks California’s admission as the 31st state of the union on September 9th, 1850
Rebecca May, president of the local Native Daughter’s chapter and club member Susan Couso presented a brand-new set of American and California flags to Richmond Principal/Superintendent Vicky Leitaker.
In a brief presentation Couso said, “Today the Native Daughters of the Golden West, Nataqua Parlor #152 would like to present two flags to Richmond School. One is the flag of our great country, and the other is the flag of our great state of California. We hope to see them flying proudly, and when you pass by, please remember those who have worked so bravely and tirelessly to protect our nation and our state and who gave these flags meaning.”
“The Native Daughters of the Golden West take great pride in being Californians from birth,” continued Couso. “They support the state in many ways including preservation and restoration of California’s historic missions and lighthouses. They support California children through their Children’s Foundation which helps with medical services for children in need, and they award educational scholarships for California students of merit.”
The Native Daughters also provide research information about early California families through their Pioneer Registry, and place Historical Markers at sites of historical interest.
The old flags will be destroyed according to protocol by the local scouts who also were on hand to lower and raise the flags during the ceremony.
