The Lassen National Forest’s Almanor Ranger District has a new chief – Kathleen Nelson – who last month took over the position of District Ranger.
Nelson transferred from the Inyo National Forest, where she had been the Forest Botanist for 17 years. During that time, she completed several temporary assignments, ranging from four months to one year in duration, as a Forest Resource Staff Officer, Forest Planner, Deputy District Ranger, and most recently as a District Ranger on the Coronado National Forest.
Prior to her time on the Inyo, Nelson worked as a district biologist, range conservationist, and recreation technician. She has worked as a private consultant, as well as for the Bureau of Land Management, and in Regions 2, 3, and 5 of the Forest Service.
Nelson and her husband, Brian, have one son, Kegan, whom they are proud to report recently graduated from UC Berkeley. As a family, they have enjoyed many bicycle tours together in the U.S. and Canada, as well as in Central and South America.
Nelson has a great love of the outdoors. She likes to spend her spare time cycling and cross-country skiing.
Nelson is excited to have this opportunity to provide leadership in managing the natural resources on the Almanor Ranger District. She said she is looking forward to getting to know the land, the communities, and the people in such a beautiful area.
