weatherupdate

Good morning everybody! Here is a quick update from the forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno. The office has issued a High Wind Watch and Winter Weather Advisory which will affect Lassen and Plumas Counties from now through Monday morning!

Wind Advisory and High Wind Watch

A Wind Advisory is in effect from now through 7:00 this evening, with an extended High Wind Watch through Sunday evening.

Forecasters expect winds will increase this morning with strongest gusts this afternoon and early evening. Even stronger and more hazardous winds are possible Sunday afternoon and evening.

For today winds will be out of the south to southwest at 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 45 mph. On Sunday sustained winds will be 25 to 40 mph with gusts to 65 mph. Higher gusts will occur in wind prone areas, especially along highway 395 south of Susanville.

High profile vehicles should avoid wind prone areas from Susanville to Doyle and Interstate 580 through Washoe Valley. Winds will also result in severe turbulence for aircraft flying through the region.

Winter Storm Warning

A Winter Storm Warning takes effect from noon today to 11:00 Monday morning above 5,000 feet.

National Weather Service forecasters say snow will begin early this afternoon and continue into Monday morning. The heaviest snow will occur late Sunday afternoon and Sunday night.

Snow accumulations of 1 to 2 feet are forecast above 5,000 feet west of Highway 395 and up to 6 inches below 5,000 feet including Highway 395 north of Susanville once snow levels drop Sunday evening. Minor snow accumulations are possible for Highway 395 from Susanville to the Nevada state line Sunday night.

During the storm winds will be out of the southwest at 15 to 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph.

On Sunday afternoon snow levels will drop to 4,500 to 5,500 feet before falling to near valley floors Sunday night.

Snow will create hazardous driving especially over Fredonyer Summit and Yuba Pass. Plan on delays, chain controls and possible temporary closures.
