It’s about to get windy! The National Weather Service office in Reno is warning area residents to expect strong, gusty winds today with heavy rain and snow predicted overnight into Saturday morning.
The wind advisory will be in effect until 10:00p.m., Friday with forecasters expecting the strongest gusts to occur this afternoon as the storm front approaches. Sustained winds of up to 35 mph with gusts to 55 mph are predicted for most of northeastern California. Gusts up to 70 mph are possible in Surprise Valley and along Highway 395 between Susanville and Reno.
Strong cross-winds and travel restrictions for high profile vehicles are expected. Damage to drought stressed trees may occur with power outages possible.
Winter Weather Advisory from 10:00p.m., Friday until 10:00a.m., Saturday
The rain and snow which has begun this morning is expected to continue into Saturday morning. Heavy snow is likely tonight and early Saturday.
Snow levels for the storm system will begin relatively high – 6000 to 7000 feet this evening – then lowering to the valley floor Saturday morning.
West of Highway 395, and above the 6,000 foot elevation, 10 to 18 inches is forecast, with 3 to 10 inches below 6,000 feet. East of Highway 395 the weather service predicts an accumulation of up to 4 inches.
