Good morning! The National Weather Service office in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for our area, warning residents to prepare for widespread snow and hazardous conditions over the next 24 hours.
The Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from noon today until 10:00a.m. Friday.
Forecasters expect light snow to begin early this afternoon but say that surface temperatures above freezing will limit accumulations. More widespread snow will begin by late afternoon and continue overnight. Snow will taper to showers by early Friday morning.
Snow accumulations will range from 1 to 4 inches below 5,000 feet, Â with 5 to 10 inches predicted above 5000 feet, mainly west of Highway 395.
The storm system is not a particularly windy one – winds from the southwest will only be around 15 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.
The snow and ice will cause travel delays and chain controls in the far northern Sierra including Yuba Pass and Fredonyer Summit. The storm will affect travel on most roads in northeast California including highways 36, 44, 70, 89 and 395.
Per usual the Weather Service warns us that even light snowfall causes major travel delays, especially during periods of high traffic volume. Be sure to allow extra time to reach your destination. Leave extra space between vehicles since it takes longer to stop on slick roadways.
