NWS Special Weather Statement: Upcoming Storms Bringing Lots of Moisture

weatherupdate
The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement warning area residents to expect wet and wintry weather this weekend and early next week.

The latest in a series of Pacific storms will move into northeast California, the Tahoe basin and western Nevada tonight into early Saturday.

This storm will bring snow to the higher elevations and a mix of rain and to the lower valleys. Accumulations in the higher terrain could reach 6 inches or more with a few inches near Truckee and Lake Tahoe. North and east of the Tahoe basin accumulations will lighter. South into Mono County only a few inches is expected in the High Sierra.

Travel headaches are possible over the Sierra passes late tonight and Saturday where snow covered and icy roads are likely.

Gusty winds could develop in western Nevada and along Highway 395 in eastern California Saturday resulting in dangerous cross winds, especially for high profile vehicles.

Monday
A stronger and wetter system will move into northern California late Sunday and spread east into western Nevada by Monday. This storm system is likely to contain a series of storm pulses that send heavy precipitation into the region starting Monday morning.

Snow levels are very uncertain with this system. Initially it appears too warm for snow below 6500 feet, but heavy precipitation can force the snow level to lower. By the time the system moves east Tuesday air temperatures could be cold enough for snow to the valley floors. By the time this system exits the region the Sierra could pick up an additional 2 feet of snow or more in the higher elevations.

Check back for frequent updates on this constantly evolving storm system.
