The National Weather Service has issued an Urgent Weather Message warning residents here in the Honey Lake Valley, along with Surprise Valley, eastern Plumas, eastern Sierra and northern Washoe Counties, to expect damaging winds from 3:00 this afternoon until 5:00 Friday morning.
This will affect Susanville, Cedarville, Fort Bidwell, Portola, Empire and Gerlach.
Forecasters expect winds from a fast-moving storm to increase this afternoon. Valleys will see strongest wind gusts this evening, while foothill areas will continue to be gusty through early Friday morning.
Winds will be out of the southwest at 20 to 30mph with gusts up to 55mph. Gusts up to 70mph are possible in wind prone locations including the Highway 395 corridor between Susanville and Doyle.
According to the NWS, strong, possibly damaging winds are possible. High profile vehicles should avoid wind prone areas, especially 395 between Susanville and the Nevada border. Winds could be strong enough to push your vehicle out of your travel lane. Check with CalTrans for the latest road information.
Weather experts at the NWS Reno Office remind residents to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away. The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in the event of a power outage.
