Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno have issued both a Winter Weather Advisory and a Freeze Warning as a late-season winter storm targets our area between now and Friday morning.
A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from this evening until Thursday morning with total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches expected in most areas. Locally higher totals are possible here in Lassen and Plumas counties. Snow should quickly melt from road surfaces after 8:00a.m.
Campers and hikers should prepare for winter conditions. Do not venture out into the back country without winter gear this week.
Even light snowfall causes major travel delays, especially during periods of high traffic volume. Be sure to allow extra time to reach your destination. Leave extra space between vehicles since it takes longer to stop on slick roadways.

A Freeze Watch will be in effect from Thursday evening through Friday morning.
Sub-freezing temperatures, as low as 29, are possible here in the Honey Lake Valley as well as eastern Plumas-eastern Sierra Counties, Surprise Valley California, Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden Area, Mineral and Southern Lyon Counties and Northern Washoe County.
Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
