NWS Weather Bulletin: Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Prompt Fire Weather Watch Today

The prospect of thunderstorms and strong outflow winds today, followed by gusty winds and low humidity on Wednesday have prompted forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno to issue a Fire Weather Watch for our area.

Here in the Honey Lake Valley we can expect wet thunderstorms today, followed by very dry conditions and breezy winds  north of Interstate 80 on Wednesday.

Today look for wide spread thunderstorms and outflow winds near 50mph. For Wednesday, West winds 15-25mph with gusts to 35mph.

Afternoon humidity 10 to 15 percent each day with poor recoveries Tuesday night. 50-70 percent in most valleys with 25-35 percent on mid-slopes.

Lightning will potentially create new fires followed by thunderstorm outflows, gusty zephyr winds and drier air resulting in fire spread. Be prepared for a busy period of new fires if the forecast pans out.

Confidence remains medium as thunderstorms may be rather wet Tuesday.

Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires.

Follow local fire restrictions. Check weather.gov/reno for updates and livingwithfire.info for preparedness tips.
