The National Weather Service office in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Watch warning residents to prepare for snow and gusty winds from Tuesday morning through Wednesday afternoon.
Forecasters expect snow to begin late Tuesday morning and continue into Wednesday. Snow accumulations of 8 to 18 inches are possible west of Highway 395, with 4 to 8 inches possible east of Highway 395.
Winds will be light except locally gusting to 40 mph over the passes.
Snow levels will start out on the valley floors through Tuesday night, rising to 6,000 feet late Wednesday afternoon.
Snow will create icy and snow covered roads. Gusty winds over the passes may result in localized white-out conditions.
Now is the time to prepare an emergency kit for your home and car. If traveling consider alternate plans, can remember to carry tire chains, extra food, water and clothing. Once the storm arrives, travel may be difficult or impossible for an extended period of time.
