NWS Weather: Storm Begins Late – Rain and Snow Expected Throughout the Day

weatherupdate

After the approaching cold front moved on-shore more slowly than forecasters anticipated the National Weather Service office in Reno is revising their timeline, and extending the Winter Weather Advisory until 7:00 this evening for our area.

Forecasters expect the snow will continue throughout the day and then taper off to snow showers this evening.

Snow totals look to be from 4 to 8 inches above 5000 feet with 6 to 12 inches near the Sierra Buttes and Yuba Pass. Here in the Honey Lake Valley, below 5000 feet in elevation, up to 4 inches are possible. Snow levels throughout the day will hover around that 5,000 foot mark.

Southwesterly winds of 10 to 20 with gusts up to 50 mph will begin shifting to the northwest this afternoon.

You can expect travel delays due to low visibility and snow covered roads for mountain passes and highways 36, 44, 49 and 89.

Even light snow accumulations on roads can lead to dangerous travel conditions. Drivers should exercise caution and be patient as travel delays are likely.
