The Lassen County Office of Education held its 3rd annual Institute Day for more than 500 local educators on September 27th, at the Lassen High Student Center. The Institute Day is designed to provide shared professional development for all county teachers.
The staffs of all ten Lassen County school districts, three independent charter schools, and the Lassen County Office of Education were present, as well as members of Lassen Community College.
Lassen County Superintendent of Schools Rich DuVarney gave a presentation on the ‘Choose Civility’ campaign followed by the keynote presenter, Damen Lopez. Lopez is the author of the book No Excuses University. His passionate message focused on a comprehensive college readiness model starting in pre-kindergarten.
Lopez’s research-based work and successful implementation in schools across the country emphasizes six exceptional systems that can be easily implemented in our local schools. The message to our students is that they can go to college and that we expect them to pursue training beyond their high school experience.
School staff and students will be encouraged to wear college shirts every Friday beginning Friday, October 11th, to celebrate both the potential and dreams of our students. Local business owners and their staff are encouraged to wear college shirts on Fridays to help promote a united front and a common message of high expectations.
