PaintCare, a non-profit stewardship organization that runs paint recycling programs across the country, announced both a one-day paint recycling drop-off event free to residents and a new permanent drop-off location in Susanville.
The drop-off event, this Saturday, September 8th, will take place in the parking lot of Diamond Mountain Casino and Hotel, located at 900 Skyline Drive in Susanville.
Additionally, Billington Ace Hardware, located at 2950 Main St. now accepts unused and unwanted paint in the community for recycling. Billington Ace Hardware joins 800-plus drop-off sites in California, which to-date have collected more than 12 million gallons of paint statewide.
“We are proud to partner with PaintCare to help our customers dispose of old paint for free in an environmentally friendly way,” said Arlin Billington, owner of Billington Ace Hardware. “It’s important to us that we not only sell paint but also encourage people to recycle their leftover paint, and we’re glad PaintCare can provide an easy, convenient way for our community to do so.”
The free, one-day drop-off event at Diamond Mountain Casino & Hotel will be held in the casino’s parking lot from 9:00a.m., to 1:00p.m., After that event, residents can drop off their unused paint during Billington Ace Hardware’s regular business hours – 8:00a.m. to 6:00p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 9:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. on Sundays.
“Whether you’re looking to de-clutter your garage or remove a potential safety hazard, PaintCare will dispose of your old paint responsibly,” said Daria Kent, PaintCare’s Northern California Regional Coordinator. “We are pleased to provide Susanville residents options to drop off their unused paint on Saturday and in the future.”
Individuals and businesses can safely dispose of unwanted house paint, stains, primers, sealers, and clear top coatings (varnish and shellac), which PaintCare will recycle (PaintCare drop-off locations cannot accept aerosols or other chemicals).
Both the event Saturday and the permanent PaintCare drop-off site at Billington Ace Hardware will accept all paint brands, regardless of where they were purchased. PaintCare will transport all collected paint from the drop-off sites to processing facilities, where it will be remixed into recycled-content paint, used as fuel, made into other products or, in the case of some unrecyclable paint, dried out and properly disposed.
The PaintCare program, which offers an alternative to local, government-run household hazardous waste sites, was signed into law in California in 2010. Similar paint stewardship programs are operated by PaintCare in: Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, Minnesota, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington D.C.
