Susanville Elks Lodge #1487 and Boy Scout Troop #159 presented a program dedicated to the American Flag and its history Wednesday morning on the lawn in front of Susanville’s venerated Elks’ Lodge at the head of Main Street.
A nice crowd showed up to help the Elks celebrate our flag along with the Lodge’s officers and the Scouts.
Each year Elks Lodges across the country observe June 14th as Flag Day, a tradition started in 1907 and later adopted as an official observance by the Government.
Here in Susanville our annual ceremony includes a fascinating history of the American flag told by former Elks Exalted Ruler Larry Rogers. As Rogers tells the story of the flag, in all its iterations, members of the Scouts bring out each flag in turn, providing a colorful American history lesson.
Each Elks officer took part in ceremony which was presided over by Susanville Elks’ Esteemed Leading Knight Spencer Wagner and included a rifle salute and the playing of taps by Thomas Tucker Post 204 of the American Legion.
