Cities around the United States are clamoring for the attention of large service providers, like Google Fiber, to bring faster internet speeds, but a new partnership between Reno Collective and Portola-based Plumas-Sierra Telecommunications proves that this level of connectivity is already possible with the company’s new fiber service.
PST’s fiber installation at 100 North Arlington in Reno will bring Reno Collective, a collaborative workspace for designers, creatives, technologists, entrepreneurs, freelancers, rocket scientists and startups, with connectivity that was not possible at the location before with other providers. This new connection will be activated just in time for the International Space Apps Challenge, taking place this weekend.
The International Space Apps Challenge is a two-day hackathon where teams of technologists, scientists, designers, artists, educators, entrepreneurs, developers and students across the globe collaborate and engage with publicly available data to design innovative solutions for global challenges.
“As Reno Collective has grown into larger locations, we’ve always been looking for ways to scale up our technology and we kept hitting a ceiling with our connection,” says Don Morrison, a member-owner of Reno Collective. “Fiber is already all over town but the issue was getting it from under the street and into the building and thankfully Plumas-Sierra was able to do that.”
This new resource will be available to Reno Collective members and visitors, which includes many popular technology meet-ups, events including Hack4Reno, NASA Space Apps Challenge, RenoWired, Pixels of Fury and six software development meet-ups.
“PST and the Reno Collective want to ensure that our local teams have access to the best resources available, and show that our community can compete with the best out there,” said Corby Erwin, PST Member Services Manager.
Gig service during the Space Apps event will ensure that bandwidth limitations are not an issue for local teams, letting them focus on the details of their projects and giving them the power and speed to quickly realize their goals.
“PST’s partnership with the Reno Collective is hopefully the beginning of a trend. We are very excited about this opportunity,” said PST General Manager, Bob Marshall.
Both Reno Collective and PST are hopeful that the service will create opportunities for new endeavors and projects that were previously constrained by slower network speeds.
