According to Lieutenant Matt Wood, on March 5th, at around 1:30a.m. officers responded to the Travel Inn Motel located at 1067 Main Street after receiving a report of arson.
“Officers contacted two individuals who reported that they were in their room when they noticed flames coming under the door of their motel room,” explains Lieutenant Wood. “The occupants opened the door and were were able to extinguish the flames on a soda can that had been set on fire just outside their room.”
During the investigation, officers located the soda can that had been set on fire and observed minor damage to the exterior of the building. There were no injuries reported as a result of the incident. The Susanville Police Department was assisted by the Susanville Fire Department during the investigation.
Based on evidence obtained at the scene, officers later located and arrested a 30 year-old Susanville resident identified by the department as Herman Shepard. Shepard was booked into the Lassen County Jail on charges of attempted murder and arson, and was held on $527,500 bail.
