James Moore, who will be retiring from the position of Susanville’s Fire Chief as of August 11th, was recognized by the City Council Wednesday evening in front of family and friends in council chambers.

“I don’t generally like to use the word proud, but I am proud to have received the opportunity to be an employee of the city of Susanville for 23 years and serve our citizens for the last 36 years as a member of the Fire Department,” Moore said earlier this year in a letter announcing his retirement.

Chief Moore’s career in public safety began in 1987 when at the age of fourteen, he joined the Susanville Fire Department Explorer Post #2911. Moore was an explorer for three years and served as Secretary/Treasurer and Lieutenant.

In 1990 he joined the Susanville Volunteer Fire Department and served for ten years, assuming increasing responsibility to serve as Lieutenant, Vice President, and President.

In 2000, Chief Moore was hired as a Fire Fighter with the Susanville Fire Department and was promoted to work as the City’s Code Enforcement Specialist from 2004 to 2006.

Chief Moore continued to rise through the ranks, serving as Fire Captain from 2006 to 2010 and was appointed to the position of Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal and served in that capacity from 2010 to 2015. He was officially sworn in as Chief in a ceremony at City Hall, April 1st, 2015.
