Residents in the South Lassen Street area were quickly evacuated by the Susanville Police Department this afternoon as firefighters from the City Fire Department, crews from the city’s Natural Gas Division and Cal-Fire worked to contain a rupture in a high-pressure natural gas line in the rear parking lot of Walton’s Mortuary.

The gas line was reportedly breached when it was accidentally struck by a construction crew working in the parking lot of the funeral home.

Residents were evacuated, and streets shut down, for about an hour as crews worked to safely stop the flow of the venting gas.
