Susanville Supermarket IGA Makes Contribution to Monticola and Penny Pines

The women of Susanville’s Monticola Club welcomed Rick and Anna Stewart from Susanville Supermarket IGA to their March 18th lunch meeting, where the Stewarts presented the organization with a check for $1,700 to support the Penny Pines and other programs. The money was generated by sales of See’s Candy at the store before Valentine’s Day.

Penny Pines is a 75-year old statewide program sponsored by the USDA Forestry Department where clubs make donations for the reforestation of regional forests.

“After last year’s devastating fires, we were honored to have this program and campaign for our community,” explains Monticola President Naomi Turner. “We have been purchasing Penny Pines Plots since 1960 to re-plant trees in our fire ravaged areas. Goat Fire, Sheep Fire to name a few.”

According to Turner, Monticola Club founder Philenda Spencer, once said, “Have the knowledge of the good causes that need assistance,” and that is exactly what the club does, finding local causes and acting on them.

“As the Monticola Club President I am honored to be a part of such a worthwhile cause and part of a group of women who have the same love for this community as I, and our founder Philenda Spencer did, 109 years ago.”

Turner describes the Monticola members as a team “Dedicated to improving our community” one cause after another.

“For 109 years we have been helping to build Swimming Pools, Parks, Libraries, and Schools to name a few.”
