For a second year the Susanville Symphony Society will be kicking off their performance season with a special concert on the lawn at the historic courthouse on Lassen Street. The concert on the green is just the start of a stellar year planned for the symphony with five performances scheduled between now and May of 2017.
September 24th 2nd Annual Concert on the Green – Bring your picnic baskets, your folding chairs and tables for this spectacular outdoor event which will feature music from Holst: The Planets, John Williams Star Wars, Bizet’s Carmen and more!
“The outdoor concert at the old courthouse is one-of-a-kind,” says Symphony Artistic Director Ben Wade.
“This is the symphony concert to dip your toes into the water, so to speak. The mood is informal, the music is fun and the audience is allowed to bring food and wine into the event so you can image the cool vibe that ripples along the green!”
October 21st and 22nd The Susanville Dance Band – As October rolls around the symphony will be featuring the Susanville Dance Band under the direction of bandleader Matt Mullin. Instrumental as well as vocal classics will be performed that will tempt you to bring your dancing shoes and kick up your heels on the dance floor. This concert will be held at the Veteran’s Memorial Hall.
“The Swing band concert is the only live venue where you can listen to an orchestra and dance at the same time,” says Wade. “This year we are embracing both young and old patrons who want to come out and get In The Mood.”
December 16th and 17th Christmas in Susanville – There is no better way to get into the holiday spirit the week before Christmas. The Susanville Choral Society will be joining the Susanville Symphony for this concert with a variety of selections from the chorus to Home Alone, We Three Kings, The Little Drummer Boy and the Hallelujah Chorus. The Symphony will also perform many of your favorite holiday classics like The Christmas Song, Frozen and Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride.
March 17th and 19th Piano Fantasia – A very special evening of music as the Susanville Symphony will be joined by Steinway artist and world famous pianist Mark Leonard Anderson. Mr. Anderson will be performing The Emperor Piano Concerto by Ludwig van Beethoven. The symphony’s mid-winter performance will also delve into two Eastern European Romantic Composers for the opposite half of this concert – a river based symphonic tone poem “The Moldau” from Czech composer Bedrich Smetana and a Russian classic: Polovtsian Dances from the opera “Prince Igor” by Alexander Borodin.
According to Wade the Piano Fantasia performance continues the symphony’s decade-long tradition of bringing in top name soloists from around the world, “We love bringing the true classics of classical music to Susanville!”
May 19th and 21st The Susanville Pops Concert – The Susanville Symphony will put its elegant touch on some of the greatest popular music of all time. The music of Grammy winning artists like Adelle, Bruno Mars and selections such as Bittersweet Symphony, A Thousand Years and Learn to Fly may have you dancing in the aisles. A few guest soloists will surprise you and the beautiful orchestration and classical spin on today’s music will astound you.
“As we always say,” comments Wade, “there is something for everyone in this concert.”
