Susanville Symphony Presents Musica de Espana

A SusanvilleStuff Feature
by Char Petersen

Susanville’s Symphony is once again preparing to surround the community with its hypnotic melodies, featuring a collective concert with music compositions from Russia to Argentina, all with the common theme of Spanish Flair.

This weekend’s concerts showcase the many aspects of the Latin Flair that had such a great influence over the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Thomas Braun, a local guitar instructor, will be playing the classical guitar in order to bring the beautiful Rodrigo concert to life.

When asked what he was most excited about for the upcoming symphony Wade explained, “Besides the concerto guitar I am excited about the completely different feel of this concert. It is very classical and will show the audience a different side to classical music that isn’t Beethoven or Mozart. I want to show them something different while still keeping the classical genre.”

In this concert the audience can expect to be showered with breath-taking performances. Liudmila Mullin will be singing Mezzo, a performance that will leave the audience in awe.

Those attending can also look forward to an original composition from the Maestro, Ben Wade, that starts off slow but soon picks up a Spanish beat with a little Cuban Jazz.

The whole Latin Symphony concert is based on Rodrigo’s piece, Concerto de Aranjuez. Rodrigo wrote this piece because he thought his wife was dying and wanted to write the 12 most passionate measures that he had ever written. Upon hearing this Wade said, “I was so moved… I knew we had to play this piece.”

When talking to other symphony members, the humor and harmonious flow of the group was apparent. When asked what he was most excited about Matt Mullin said, “I’m extremely excited that for the first time in 40 years the tuba is on a riser, so we actually get to sit on stage level and be seen. For me that is very exciting.”

Gabe Szovati, a trombone player, also commented on his enjoyment of the unique concert saying, “I like that there is a theme within the theme. There’s different songs, different thoughts, different music. It’s a conglomeration of music with Spanish influence that I really enjoy playing.”

The symphony concert will be held at the Assembly of God church April 20th at 7:00p.m. and April 22nd at 2:30p.m.

Tickets are available at Leslie’s Jewelry. Reserved seating for $27.00, general seating for $22.00, Sunday matinee and student tickets $12.00. For more information you can visit the Symphony’s website at susanvillesymphony.com.
