Lassen Family Service’s 10th annual Walk-A-Mile event, a mile-long color walk through mid-town Susanville to support survivors of sexual assault and child abuse, will be held tomorrow, April 22nd in Memorial Park and it looks like the weather will be gorgeous for this year’s walk.
“This year, in addition to the resource fair and one-mile walk,” says event organizer Kendra Zaengle, “we have added a 5K Fun Run fundraiser.”
Money raised from the 5K will go to Lassen Resiliency for training Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners.
“Currently,” explains Zaengle, “if a survivor chooses to participate in an exam following sexual assault, due to lack of local SANE nurses, law enforcement or an advocate will drive the survivor to Redding or Reno for the examination.”
“In order to collect the most evidence, the survivor is asked not to shower, brush their teeth or remove their clothes until after the exam.”
Registration for the walk will begin at 8:00a.m. in the park, followed by the Opening Ceremony at 9:00. The 5K run and one-mile walk start at 10:00.
From 9:00a.m. until 1:00p.m. there will be a ‘Resource Fair’ along with food and coffee.
LFS hosts the walk annually at the end of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week to raise awareness and to provide information on the support services offered in Lassen County.
