The Renegades celebrate a first-place finish in the recent Chico tournament

by Shelley Bennett

Although our cooler temps and afternoon storms haven’t caught up to the calendar, summer and all of its activities are in full swing!

Lassen County is a great place to spend your summer and every day can be filled with a new event, outdoor adventure, or even just a nap.

Baseball has always been a part of my summer and our family hung out at Frank Ernaga Field last weekend to watch the Susanville Renegades.

The Renegades are a summer league baseball team for high school (and sometimes college) aged athletes. Coached this year by local Casey Lee, this team has played a lot of baseball in the last month. They traveled to Chico on Father’s Day weekend and went undefeated, winning the U-17 tournament championship against Fairfield.

Last weekend, the Renegades went 2-1 in the Tommy Tucker tournament to get to the championship game where they lost to the Carson City Blue Jays.

Tucker Schall pitched a complete shutout in the semifinal game against Humboldt. He pitched 7 innings, gave up only 2 hits, struck out 6, and gave up no runs.

If you haven’t watched a game yet, there’s still time! The Renegades have two double headers this week, versus Wooster on Wednesday 6/28 first pitch at 11:00, and against Galena on Thursday 6/29 starting at 1:00.

Grab some popcorn and a drink from the Snack Bar hosted by the Grizzliettes Booster Club. They’ll also have a baked potato or hotdog lunch special for $5. (Blatant self-promotion plug there!)

Coach Lee’s love of the game runs deep and he also serves as assistant LCC coach and president of the Susanville Little League board. On behalf of the board, he would like to congratulate the championship teams.

The Minor Cardinals had to win three games in the playoffs to come up with first place. They beat the undefeated A’s to get to the championship. The Major Giants led the entire season in first place and capped off the year with a championship win.

In Juniors, the second place Orioles came from behind to beat the first place Angels in the championship.

All Star weekend is coming up and Susanville’s Little League is hosting this year’s district Major tournament. Games start on Thursday 6/29 with Feather River and Quincy at 5:00 on Pat Murphy field. Susanville will take on the winner of that game on Friday 6/30 at 5:00. Check their Facebook page for the updated bracket.

Susanville’s Minor team will be on the road, playing Modoc on Thursday in Portola and the Juniors start their tournament in Quincy on July 5th. Good luck to all of Susanville’s teams!

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to [email protected] and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”
