Lassen High’s “Gold Rush” Homecoming is next week and the ASB class has been busy for the last few weeks brainstorming ideas and planning the details.
The week kicks off on Monday 9/25 with a “Gold Fever” dress up day. Students are encouraged to wear their best 70s attire, including bell bottoms, shirts with wide lapels, and concert tees from the era. A few of the teachers and I have agreed to a group costume. I can’t give away any secrets, but it includes a famous sitcom neighbor and a caftan.
At lunch, students will compete in a Hula Hoop contest for awards and prizes. There will also be disco music. I remember thinking in the 80s that disco music was really lame. I’ve changed my mind.
Girls Golf will be competing at Wilcox Oaks and Field Hockey travels to Chico for a make-up game.
Tuesday brings “Go for the Gold” where students can dress like an Olympian in any sports attire, red/white/blue, or even just sweatpants and sneakers. The Potato Olympics will take place at lunch and students will put their potato athlete through a series of track and field events, including javelin, sprints, and long jump.
Our Art department is holding a Chalk Art gallery and students will create their own 18”X18” masterpieces on the big cement walls between the 700 and 100 buildings. Volleyball takes on Yreka, JV at 4:30 and Varsity at 5:30.
On Wednesday, “Comedy Gold” is the theme and students will pair up and dress as Dynamic Duos like Shaggy and Scooby, Chip and Dale, Dumb and Dumber, or Hanz and Franz. Our Army recruiter is creating an obstacle course for any Dynamic Duo who accepts the challenge. More awards and prizes will be given!
That night is the big Powder Puff game where the team of Seniors and Freshmen will battle the Juniors and Sophomores. There will be a special halftime performance by the Powder Puff Cheerleaders. The teams have been practicing with their student coaches after school and the competition is fierce. You should hear the smack talk!
Gates open at 6:30 with the game starting at 7:00. Admission is $5 for adults and high school students, $3 for senior citizens and K-8 students. LHS students who have purchased their ASB sticker and have their card at the ticket booth will get in for free! (Buy your kid an ASB sticker! You’ll save a few bucks next week!) There will also be Food Trucks so you don’t even have to cook dinner.
X-Country will be on the run at Fall River High School. (see what I did there…lol)
Students have a choice on Thursday with “Pirates v. Prospectors” or it’s amazing what you can do with a bandana. Seriously, all you need is a bandana, your whole costume can be made with how you tie it and where you place it! There is a scavenger hunt for treasure throughout the day.
The Freshmen Football team will play that night at 5:30 on Arnold Field while Girls Golf has a match at Lake Shastina. Volleyball travels to West Valley for their games.
“Grizzlies go GOLD” on Friday in their finest gold and yellow outfits. The Homecoming parade will begin at 2:12 and starts at the entrance to the back parking lot (Berkeley Street), down Main to Foss Street. The community is invited to sit opposite the high school and enjoy the festivities, which will include performances from the drill team, cheerleaders, and drumline.
The Alumni of the Year will be introduced as well as the Royalty representing their grade levels. Each class has been given a movie to base their float and skit on and I’m sure they will be impressive. The Freshmen (Class of 2027) will bring Indiana Jones to Lassen Co, the Sophomores (2026) chose The Goonies to interpret. Juniors (2025) are exploring a whole new world in Aladdin and the Seniors (2024) will cap it off with a tribute to Captain Jack in “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
Please join us that night as the Grizzlies take on the Las Plumas T-birds. We have special gifts for the alumni in attendance, look for our ASB table with the gold sequin tablecloth. Game times are JV at 5:00 and Varsity at 7:30. If you can’t make the parade, we’re going to do it all over again before the game and at halftime.
It’s Saturday and Homecoming week will come to a close with a dance sponsored by the Sophomore Class. Watch the bulletin and social media for more information. Our Swim Team is also competing in the Nor Cal Invitational that day so send some good luck their way.
We are encouraging businesses and private residences to get into the spirit and show their Lassen Pride with outside decorations, like streamers, purple and gold flowers, or supportive signs. Add a little purple and gold to your Friday outfit as well. You can show off your creativity on the Susanville Click & Fix app. It takes just a minute to download and set up an account.
It’s always a great day to be a Grizzly, but there’s something about Homecoming at Lassen High School that makes it even better.
On a side note, it’s Landon Bennett’s 21st Birthday today! Wish him a happy one as he is no doubt studying in one of the many libraries on Cal’s campus. Or maybe not.
Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to [email protected] and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”
