The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett

by Shelley Bennett

About two years ago a friend mentioned that if I went to an Alumni Association meeting, they might consider donating money towards purchasing a flag that the Drill Team could present. We used to always borrow one from the Depot, but during Covid it went missing.

So I did and they were all friendly and accommodating, especially the president, Mrs. Donna Morelini. Now that I look back, I think thatā€™s how she suckered me in.

Since then, Iā€™ve attended for other reasons, to invite them to Homecoming, give an update on school events and ASB, and most recently I was ā€œappointedā€ to help with the gym re-naming ceremony. I used the word ā€œappointedā€ like it was an honor many were vying for when in reality, I received a text or phone call from Mrs. Morelini and was ā€œvolun-toldā€.

And that was ok too, because it was something I cared about and I wanted to make sure that Mary, Ann, and Michelle knew how much our community loved and admired their husband and father.

It was at one of those meetings where I was also volun-told about the opportunity to edit the Alumni Newsletter. Luckily, I snatched that one up before anyone else could!

Iā€™m just teasing! I know Mrs. Morelini can take it, and in all seriousness, the Lassen High School Alumni Association is filled some very interesting people and as a group, they have done some incredible things. Most recently they have given a very generous donation to the LHS Drumline and gifted yearbooks to some deserving seniors.

They are also planning the annual Alumni picnic, held on June 14, 10:00-2:00 at Jensen Hall. It will be catered by the brothers behind Zatoā€™s Sno Mountain Chalet. Iā€™ll share more details as I get them.

I would encourage all LHS Alumni to join our group. Itā€™s only $35 for a lifetime membership and you receive several newsletters per year to keep you up-to-date on your classmates. And if you graduated before 1955, itā€™s FREE! What a deal.

I used to think I was too young to join the Alumni Association, but guess what? When you graduate from high school, you are considered old by anyone under the age of 17. Besides, it really is a hoot.

Every meeting is also a history lesson and I learn something new about my beloved alma mater. We really need some more alumni from the 80s and 90s. Iā€™m there from the class of ā€™88 and VP Niki Jarrell represents ā€™91, but thatā€™s about it.

Thank goodness Portia Korver and officer Curtis Bortle are there from the 2000s and up! Now that I think of it, we are all probably there as part of Mrs. Moreliniā€™s master plan.

Next month is our Spring Social. We are honoring Shanda Hooven (former counseling secretary), Greg Dickerson (former teacher, coach, and athletic director), and Doc Blevins (longtime supporter). They will be recognized as our ā€œHonorary Alumnus of the Year.ā€

If you would like to join in the celebration (and maybe become a member), it is on Wednesday April 9th, 5:00 at the Senior Center by Riverside Park.

Please bring a hot dish or salad to share and RSVP to Kathryn Dempsey 510-506-5416.
Hope to see you there and go Grizzlies!

Remember when news was ā€˜newsyā€™? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to [email protected] and Iā€™ll do my best to include it here in ā€œThe Good Stuff.ā€
