The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett

Thanksgiving is a time for lots of “good stuff”: good food, good company, good times, but this year might look different for a lot of us. With the rise in Covid-19 cases locally, travel plans might be postponed, the group around your table might be smaller, and while I am so thankful for my family and our health, it is just tough.

However, Lassen County has always been a place where the community comes together for those in need and this year is no exception.

There are a few groups at Lassen High School who traditionally hold food and change drives at this time of year and since the school transitioned to distance learning, they need our help more than ever!

The Interact Club is collecting change to donate to the Salvation Army. Advisor Zeane Barber told me that instead of placing collection sites in each teacher’s classroom, they will be in the Main Office at LHS. If you’d like to donate, please stop by before Thursday 11/19 and someone in the office will gladly accept.

Tyler Eidsen, member of ASB, is organizing another change drive to help with Holiday with Hero. He told me that there are several locations around town set up with cans to accept donations, including County Cleaners, Uptown Uniforms, The Book Nook, Joe’s, Idaho Grocery, Courthouse Café, and Oscar Nails.

Advisor Rachel Stewart said that it has been difficult to fundraise with all of the restrictions in place so any amount you can give is much appreciated.

Our local businesses are so generous, especially when it comes to supporting our schools. The Lassen High field hockey and football teams are both very thankful to Hat Creek Construction for the loan of their outdoor lights. Now they can practice safely outside even when it gets dark!

One of my readers reached out with some “good stuff” last week. After two postponed weddings, local bride Jamie Wright and her future husband Jeremy Stocks decided to ditch the plans and get married in Cabo San Lucas on November 2, 2020. Jamie said, “love prevailed and we had the perfect intimate day that was truly about use and our love for each other.” Now, that’s some great stuff! Congratulations to the Stocks!

Thanks to all of you who posted positive feedback and comments last week. It made me feel like a real writer! Especially when former teachers Jennie Cesarin and Sandy Bosworth shared their congratulations.

I hope you take time this week to empty your change jar and find one of the places I mentioned and donate it, the feeling you get when you help someone out is truly “good stuff”.

Jeremy and Jamie Stocks, radiant on their wedding day

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to [email protected] and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”
