As I walked into school this morning, I was greeted by “good stuff”. Decorations reminiscent of the Cars Pixar movie filled the hallway, complete with a road, stop lights, and finish line. It was evident that our ASB class, led by Jojo Villareal and teachers Rachel Stewart and Angelia Harris had been hard at work.
The other buildings were decorated as the Animal Kingdom and Under the Sea.
This week is Lassen High’s Homecoming and with a Disney theme of “Once Upon a Homecoming”, it’s sure to have something for everyone, from fun dress up days to colorful floats and skits on Friday.
Today’s dress up day was to wear a color to represent a feeling from the movie Inside Out. My classroom resembled a rainbow of red, blue, purple, green, and yellow to represent anger, sadness, fear, disgust, and joy. I wore black. Don’t worry, it’s not depression. I just feel “all of the feelings” these days.
The rest of the week brings Aliens v. Cowboys (Toy Story), Monsters U (sorority and fraternity), Disney Heroes and Villains, and culminates with the Happiest Place on Earth, a purple and gold tribute to LHS on Friday.
Coincidentally school picture day also coincides with Disney Hero and Villain day. It’s going to be epic. I’ll have pictures next week.
Our big assembly with a parade of floats, games, performances, and the announcement of royalty takes place on Friday after 6th period. The freshman game follows at 3:30 with JV at 5:30 and Varsity kick off at 7:30.
We would love to see alumni at the game as we take on the Orland Trojans! Brush up on “We’re Loyal and True”. You’ll be part of the halftime show.
I remember when my uncles were in high school and football games were played on Saturdays. We would get up early and watch the Homecoming parade on Main Street. It was always chilly and my brother and I would snack on donuts purchased from the shop across the street that is now Wheels West.
The floats were old school, made of tissue paper and chicken wire, and always referred to some way the Grizzlies would beat the opponent, like Torture the Tigers or Wipe the Miners. We still try to integrate the game in some way, but the floats are more of a backdrop to a humorous skit featuring each class.
What do you remember about your Homecoming? A highlight from my senior year was when I was nominated for Homecoming queen. Stacey (Yarborough) Barnetche and I were driven around the track in one of Bob Shamrock’s convertible Cadillacs.
My friend Stacey looked beautiful in her formal gown as she was crowned Homecoming Queen on the field that night. I don’t remember who we played or if we won or lost, but I do remember that moment.
The colors of the jerseys of our escorts as they came over at halftime to take their places. (Karl, Eric, Danny) The sounds of the opponents as they left the field. (There was some smack talking) Mr. Kingston announcing our names. The band playing the school song. (Richard on the drums) It seems like yesterday. (Class of 88 rules)
My view of Homecoming has changed over the years and some of the traditions have too, but it will always be about the people you were with and the memories you made. (Forever more you will find us, always loyal and true, LHS alright! LHS fight, fight!)
Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to [email protected] and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”
