You know it’s time to take an annual visit to Wemple’s Pumpkin Patch when the air starts to get crisp, harvest colors are in full bloom and the pumpkins are ready for picking . Last weekend marked the official opening of the local Fall ‘hot spot’ and what a great way to celebrate the changing of seasons by enjoying a day of family fun at Wemple’s Pumpkin Patch.
This year marks the 19th year of the Pumpkin Patch and since the family decided to open the patch it has continued to expand. Dena and Fred Wemple with their son Matt and daughter Callie Wemple begin organizing and planning for opening day months in advance and rely on the family to help run and operate the business. The family also farms hay but, the ranch is transformed into a whimsical Fall fun attraction for the month of October each year.
“I read an article about pumpkin patches in a magazine,” said owner, Dena Wemple. “We decided to plant just one little small patch, and from there things just continued to grow,” she said.
Nothing beats a trip out into the pumpkin patch, walking through rows and rows in search of the perfect pumpkin. Dena says the patch features over 30 different varieties of pumpkins. After loading up your pumpkins you can pick through tasty winter squash, gourds and corn stalks for decoration.
The Pumpkin Patch is packed with activities for everyone, from hay rides, a corn maze, tractor displays, and a variety of animals to view. New this year are the Clydsdale horses on display for families to view and pet.
“Anna Stewart was the first person to go through our corn maze this year and not get lost,” said Dena.
The gift shop is filled from the ceiling to the floor with Fall and Holiday decor, candles, knitted items, county signs and you can even pick up a goodie or two for the trip home.
Last but not least you can stop off at the Cook-house and order up some pumpkin soup ( if available) pumpkin pie, or a carmel apple. Lunch items such as hamburgers, hot-dogs and chili are also available. Top off your meal with a warm cup of hot apple cider.
Over the years the Wemple’s have seen many families enjoy the pumpkin patch.
“We are happy to continue to help build memories,” said Dena. “It’s so neat to see all the generations coming back to enjoy the pumpkin patch.”
