Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno have issued a Fire Weather Watch in effect this afternoon and evening as they expect gusty winds and low humidity in Surprise Valley and across eastern Lassen County.
Winds are expected to be west to southwest at 20 to 25mph with gusts up to 40mph.
Low humidity, with a minimum of 13 to 17 percent, will add to the fire danger for 3 to 6 hours this afternoon and evening.
The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions.
