The National Weather Service Office in Reno is warning residents of our area to expect falling temperatures with snow showers likely tonight and Monday.
According to the NWS a fast moving low pressure system will move across the Sierra and western Nevada through Monday. This weather system will bring a round of snow showers to the Sierra and western Nevada.
Timing
Snow showers will move into northeast California this afternoon and then spread south along the Sierra crest this evening and into western Nevada overnight. A second wave of moderate snowfall is possible for the Sierra and western Nevada late Monday afternoon and Monday night. Confidence in the track of this second band of snow is lower but the latest projections place the best chance for accumulating snow south of Highway 50.
Snow Potential
Storm total snowfall potential: 6 to 12 inches of snow above 7000 feet in the Sierra with 3 to 6 inches in the Sierra and northeast California between 5000 and 7000 feet. For western
Nevada… an inch or less except for locally higher amounts especially foothill locations.
Impacts
Slick and hazardous roads with possible travel delays. Chains and snow tires will likely be needed throughout the Sierra tonight through Tuesday morning. For western Nevada locations… conditions will be more variable with the most likely period of impact late Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning when the combination of light snow accumulations and temperatures below freezing could create hazardous driving conditions.
If you are planning travel or outdoor activities through Tuesday morning… keep up to date with the latest information on this storm system. Be sure your tires have sufficient tread depth… and carry chains especially if planning travel through the Sierra.
