weatherupdate

Get ready everybody! It appears as though the first strong storms of Autumn are about to impact Lassen County.

High Wind Warning – 8:00p.m. Thursday until 11:00a.m. Friday

Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno have issued a High Wind Warning, which will be in effect from 8:00p.m. Thursday until 11:00a.m., Friday.

Weather officials are expecting winds to increase Thursday afternoon and persist through Friday. A second wave of strong and potentially damaging winds is likely Saturday afternoon into Sunday.

Winds will be out of the southwest at 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 60 mph. Gusts up to 70 mph will occur in wind prone areas between Johstonville and the Nevada border along Highway 395.

As with most of these powerhouse storms damage to trees, power lines and property is possible. High profile vehicles should avoid wind prone areas along Highway 395 from Susanville to Doyle. Winds will also result in severe turbulence for aircraft flying through the region.

Special Weather Statement

Forecasters are warning that a strong, two-part, Pacific storm is forecast to impact the region beginning Thursday with periods of strong winds and heavy Sierra rainfall persisting through the weekend.

The first part of the storm will impact the region Thursday and Friday. Heavy rain in the Sierra and northeast California will slow travel by creating conditions slick roads and reduced visibility, minor rock slides and ponding of water on roads may also occur.

The second part of this storm is forecast to arrive Saturday with another round of strong winds for the eastern Sierra and western Nevada. A period heavy rainfall will move into the northern Sierra Saturday afternoon and evening with snow levels lowering to 8000 to 9000 feet.

A final period of heavy precipitation in the Sierra is likely Sunday night and early Monday with snow levels dropping to 6000 to 7000 feet by Monday morning.

Precipitation should spread into western Nevada Sunday night and early Monday with wet roads possible for the Monday morning commute.

Significant impacts this weekend will remain focused on a potential high wind event Saturday with additional travel difficulties for high profile vehicles and damage to trees, power lines and property possible. Snow may briefly accumulate on the Sierra passes above 8,500 feet on Saturday night, with a higher potential for travel delays in the Sierra due to snow Sunday night and Monday morning on Interstate 80 and Highway 50.
