The National Weather Service office in Reno has issued a Wind Advisory and a Special Weather Statement warning residents of a series of wet storms affecting our area through the Thanksgiving weekend.
Wind Advisory
The NWS has a Wind Advisory in effect from 10:00 Friday morning until 4:00 Saturday afternoon.
Winds will increase late this morning and continue to strengthen through Saturday afternoon with gusts reaching up to 55mph in wind prone areas.
Motorists in high profile vehicles can expect difficult driving conditions with strong cross winds possible. Especially in the 395 corridor between Johnstonville and the Nevada state line.
Special Statement
A series of winter systems are set to move through northeastern California during the heavily traveled Thanksgiving weekend. While none of these storms are expected to be strong, they will be cold with snow affecting Sierra passes as early as late Saturday afternoon with snowfall down to the western Nevada Valley floors by Sunday.
The first impact will be the potential for strong and gusty winds Friday afternoon into Saturday. Strong winds aloft are likely to produce a sudden onset of gusty winds through valley locations mainly along the Highway 395. Restrictions for high profiles vehicles and impacts to aviation travel are possible.
Outdoor holiday decorations should be secured or stored indoors to avoid having them blow away.
Snow provides the primary impact for travel Saturday evening into Sunday. Snow could create travel headaches starting late Saturday afternoon in northeast California, spreading into the northern and central Sierra Saturday evening and western Nevada late Saturday night.
Icy conditions along with chain controls and travel delays are possible over the passes through early Sunday evening. Conditions will begin to improve Sunday night.
