Why We Love This Place Wednesday: Law Enforcement Torch Run

By Terra Avilla

The Special Olympics Annual Torch Run is almost here! Yep, that’s right, June 15th is almost upon us. That’s TOMORROW PEOPLE! However, it’s not too late to sign up! Even if you hate to run, this event is still a Lassen County must-do.

The run is easily completed by a “brisk walk” so please don’t feel intimidated. My running abilities have drastically degraded over the years and lord knows I haven’t been “training” and I’ll be there so, if you show up, you can be my walking buddy.

So now that we have decided what you will be doing Thursday morning, let’s discuss why it is so important that you are there. This event helps bring funds and awareness to Northern California’s Special Olympics Programs.

The second annual Torch Run allows each and every participant to “be a hero” and help join Lassen County’s local Law Enforcement community to escort the Special Olympics torch (called the “Flame of Hope) on its journey to the 2023 Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games this month.

Nope, you don’t have to be in Law Enforcement to participate, but yes, you will see your favorite LEOs there. (Our very own Sheriff Growdon helps lead the way!)

The morning is spent with our community in this very unique event, and what a great way to teach our kiddos about doing things for others and inclusivity! Seriously, guys it’s a win-win.

We need you though! Like so many of the wonderful things brought to you in Lassen County, the wonderful person that is Calli Oxford, (who I have so lovingly bequeathed with the title Special Olympics Torch Run Liaison Coordinator) has been working hard to get this thing not only up and running but has been working hard to secure funds.

Our County set a goal to help raise $5,000 dollars for the Northern California Special Olympics! As you can imagine that is not an easy feat and we need your help!

If you are unable to go to the Torch Run, you can still donate to this very worthy cause online. Additionally, Ace’s Hardware is doing “round-ups” all month long! Round up your change at the register, snap a picture and post it #Aceletr (Short for “Ace Law Enforcement Torch Run.”) By doing so, you could win a $50 Amazon gift card! And how easy is that?

Here is a link so you can see all the wonderful things this organization does! I will see you tomorrow, bright and early and we can discuss in person why the Law Enforcement Torch Run is one of the reasons I love where we live.
