Why We Love This Place Wednesday: Nicomi Reed

By Terra Avilla

Stop what you are doing and read this article about sweet- sweet Nicomi Reed. Because sweet, sweet Nicomi Reed is as about as modest as you can get yet deserves all the praise in the world.

I met Nicomi through her other half Casey Lee. I was just sitting there at a baseball game at good ole Memorial Ballpark when I saw this glowing little blonde make her way into the grandstands.

I had recognized her from pictures and knew she was there on behalf of coach Casey. She was young, and kind (she smiled as my children ran amuck in the stands), so obviously my children gravitated to her.

And now I know why. Nicomi is just wonderful. Just when you think that she cannot be any more spectacular — she will go and surprise you. Not only is Nicomi an authentic, kind human, she is so talented it’s almost unfair.

Nicomi is a gorgeous dancer and choreographer, lending her talents not only to J&J Dance, but also to Lassen Family Services for their annual Dancing for a Brand New Me fundraiser.

Last year Nicomi joined the team and was an instant hit. Her personality made everyone adore her, but her talent spoke for itself. I remember after the show, speaking with Casey, and he was so proud. He stated he had never really had the opportunity to watch her perform like that and was so amazed at how great she really is.

This year Nicomi is helping to lead the charge in the show’s success, and I learned that my dear friend is extremely organized and a great leader. I (as well as the other cast and crew) am so thankful for the things Ms. Nicomi is getting done and handling.

And as if that wasn’t taking up her time, Nicomi is in school full-time for nursing. How she is managing to thrive so well in her classes, working part time at the studio, volunteering for Lassen Family Services, and still make time to catch an occasional ball game or two, I will never know.

But what I do know is that my family absolutely adores her. She is so kind, and patient with my girls. They love her, always asking if Ms. Nicomi is going to be at any event, we tote them too. Just last week – Pearl, my five-year-old, said she wants to take finger painting classes from Nicomi.

When I asked Pearl if Ms. Nicomi teaches finger painting class she responded, “Well she should. She would be a great teacher at it.”

And you know what? Pearl is probably right. There are probably not a lot of things that Nicomi would be good at. But speaking to her, you would never get the inclination about exactly how fantastic she is. Like I stated earlier – she is probably one of the humblest people I have ever met.

When Nicomi isn’t being creative, or athletic, or hyper intelligent, she somehow manages time to be my friend. And for that I am thankful. Because she is, and always will be, one of the reasons I love where we live.
