Firefighters and equipment from the Susanville Interagency Fire Center are battling a lightning-sparked wildfire on high desert rangeland about 30 miles northeast of Susanville.
The Rush Fire is burning near Rush Creek Mountain and has grown to an estimated 6,000 acres since Sunday evening. It is burning within a Bureau of Land Management wilderness study area and is not threatening structures.
The fire is burning grass, brush and juniper, impacting habitat for greater sage-grouse, mule deer and other wildlife.
A type 2 incident management team, NorCal Team 2, will take command of the firefighting effort tomorrow morning. The multi-agency team yesterday completed work on the 61,000-acre Lost Fire southeast of Cedarville, so it was already in northeast California and able to move quickly into position to work on the Rush Fire.
Fire crews yesterday evening contained another lightning-caused fire near the Marr Ranch in the same general area as the Rush Fire. It burned about 200 acres.
Officials at SIFCÂ are urging area residents and visitors to be careful with fire, as high temperatures, gusty winds and low humidity are causing extreme fire danger in area forests and rangelands.
