Smokey Bear is turning 75-years old on Friday, August 9th, and Lassen National Forest is inviting everyone to a party in his honor! The bear has become a national icon since 1944, when he was rescued after burning his paws during a wildfire in New Mexico.
“Smokey has helped to educate generations of kids and adults about wildfire prevention and campfire safety,” said Tim Pohlman, Acting Forest Supervisor, Lassen N.F.
Smokey Bear, whose motto is, “Only you can prevent forest fires,” has been the face of the longest-running public service advertising campaign in U.S. history.
To celebrate Smokey Bear’s legacy, the Lassen National Forest’s Almanor Ranger District is hosting a birthday party at the District Office on August 9th from 4:30 to 5:30.
This free event will have games, a fire truck, cake and of course Smokey himself will be there.
