Zelma Martha Power Sherman
Zelma Sherman passed away December 31, 2014 at the age of 100 surrounded by family and friends. She was born February 22, 1914 in Winkelman, Arizona.
Zelma spent her early years in Orange, California. She attended UC Berkeley where she majored in physical and general education. She returned to Orange to teach school. During World War II, she met and married Marvin Sherman “Sherm” and moved to HoneyLakeValley where they ranched east of Janesville. Being raised in the city of Orange, Zelma had to learn new skills working a cattle ranch. To the great surprise of Sherm’s family, she truly enjoyed the ranching lifestyle and one of her favorite stories is how she would always land on her feed when bucked off a horse. Her husband was amazed that she never injured herself landing that way.
Zelma returned to teaching and taught 7th and 8th grade in a one room school house in Standish, Ca. She also taught physical education and was a strong supporter of any exercise. She was an avid golfer and traveled all over the country golfing. She participated in numerous golfing tournaments including the Bing Crosby National Tournament. She taught “Sherm” to golf when they sold the ranch and retired.
Zelma and Sherm never had children of their own, but over the years they provided a home for children to attend high school, and children of Zelma’s friends and family would come, stay and work the ranch during summer months. These children, now grown, with their own families always considered themselves a part of the Sherman family and remained very close to Zelma after Sherm’s death in 1974.
Zelma is survived by her niece Stacy Reno who currently lives in Orange, Ca., Nephew Tyler Krull who currently lives in Placentia, Ca., and her foster daughter, Ethel Wilson who currently lives in Litchfield, Ca., and her many golfing companions.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Eagle Lake Village at 2001 Paul Bunyan Road, Susanville, CA., on January 24, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the “Friends of the Library” in Susanville, Ca., or to the “Diamond Mountain Women’s Golf Club” at Diamond Mountain Golf Course in Susanville, Ca.
