Why We Love This Place Wednesday: College Basketball Games

By Terra Avilla

This time of year is always so rough for me, because, well, Christmas is over, and it’s too early to be looking forward to spring break. It’s still cold, the days are short, and now the good holidays – like my birthday – aren’t for another 10 months. It’s just a “blah” time for me.

One thing, however, is a local constant this time of year that I can count on to make me happy, and that is catching our college basketball games!  Guys, our team is good. Like really good.

They are coached by Coach Freedman, (a “Why We Love This Place” article alumni), and it so cool to watch him and the women’s team, coached by Coach (Derrick) Jackson compete.

I know I spend a lot of time praising the baseball club for how great they are with my daughters, but I recently had a firsthand look and the men’s basketball team being ever so patient with my four-year-old, who invited herself onto the court, in the middle of their practice.

They were beyond adorable with her and were so polite to me.

Attending games is definitely a great way to get out of the house during these cold months. (Because, you know, it’s an inside sport, meaning you won’t freeze while watching it!)

Our crowd section is always filled with wonderful people, between alumni, college staff, the student section, and the other eclectic group of Cougar Basketball Fans, it is a great place to go unwind.  And it’s a great price. The entry cost is minimal, the food pricing is a steal, and it is a total family friendly event.

If you have your kiddos playing basketball I would one hundred percent recommend catching a game.  A lot of the time, a men’s team plays on the same day as the women’s team, so you get a two-for-one experience!

Heck, I know very little about the rules of the game, but between watching the players battle and watching how passionate the coaches coach, the games are very entertaining.

I can only imagine that if you actually understood the rules of the court, it would probably be a great experience tenfold.

The Cougs (both men and the women’s team) play today at the Lassen College Gym. The men play at 5:00 and the women play at 7:00. What a great way to break up the monotony that is this time of year than to go catch a local game.

By yourself, with your kids, or with your spouse, it is always a very fun environment.

Plus, these local athletes, I’m sure, would certainly appreciate, and deserve, your support.  So, check out their schedule and come catch a game, and see why they are two of the reasons I love where we live!

GO COUGS
