The swiftly rising, icy runoff-fed Susan River has become too dangerous to hold this Saturday’s Junior Fishing Derby according to Lassen Sportsmen’s Club President Wade Workman, who made the announcement Wednesday afternoon.
“I met today with the Susanville Fire Chief,” explained Workman in an email. “As a result of his input, the City of Susanville Senior Staff and the Fishing Derby Committee, I made the decision to postpone the Junior Fishing Derby until sometime in August – stay tuned for the exact date.”
Workman said that he river is predicted to have flows in excess of what is considered safe.
“Given the high flows, very warm air temperatures and very cold temperature of the water, anyone falling in would be in immediate distress and facing a difficult rescue situation. The only correct decision is to postpone until a later date.”
The date of the postponed derby will be announced at a later time.
