The National Weather Service is warning Lassen County residents that significant fire starts are possible Thursday with a predicted round of abundant dry lightning, low humidity and gusty winds.
According to the weather service low pressure off the California coast will move slowly inland Thursday. Mid-level moisture and instability will increase Thursday morning and continue into the afternoon with scattered thunderstorms possible.
The thunderstorms will start dry and gradually transition to wet during the day with only spotty wetting rains possible. A significant number of new fire starts is possible Thursday due to lightning from these storms.
Outflow winds…peak gusts to 40 mph near thunderstorms. Impacts… lightning may create a significant number of new fire starts.
Tonight: Isolated showers and thunderstorms before 11pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 55. West wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 85. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph.
Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 52. Breezy, with a northwest wind 15 to 20 mph decreasing to 5 to 10 mph in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.
Thursday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 11am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the morning.
