Weather Update: NWS Issues Winter Weather Advisory for Thursday

There is a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 7:00a.m. Thursday until 10:00p.m. Thursday

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for areas west of Highway 395 in Lassen, Plumas and Sierra counties.

Forecasters expect strong, gusty, southerly winds to move into the region early Thursday morning. Peak winds will be from daybreak Thursday to mid-afternoon. Snow is likely to begin around noon or early afternoon Thursday, lasting through the evening.

There is a chance snow may arrive a few hours sooner.

South to southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph are likely with gusts reaching 50 mph. There will be higher gusts on ridges and along Highway 395 from Doyle to Susanville.

According to the NWS we can expect snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches above 5500 feet and west of Highway 395; 1 to 3 inches above 5500 feet and east of Highway 395 and less than an inch below 5,500 feet including Susanville.

Snow levels will range from 4800 to 5500 feet.

Travel along Highway 395 south of Susanville will be impacted by strong gusty winds Thursday. High profile vehicles should be prepared. Snow accumulations are likely Thursday afternoon and evening on highways 70, 36 and 44, especially over passes including Fredonyer and Yuba.

Expect delays and chain controls.
