The National Weather Service office in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect from 4:00a.m. Monday to 4:00a.m. Tuesday above 5500 feet.
According to the warning we can expect periods of moderate to heavy snow beginning early Monday morning and continuing through early Tuesday morning.
Snow accumulations of 8-14 inches above 5,500 feet are forecast west of Highway 395. 4-8 inches above 5,500 feet east of Highway 395.
Winds early Monday will start out at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Those winds will decrease by noon during period of heaviest precipitation.
At 4:00a.m. Monday the snow level starts out at 5,000 feet, slowly rising to around 7,000 feet by Tuesday morning.
Snow and blowing snow due to winds will create near white out conditions along with icy roads. Travel delays and chain controls are likely along highways 36, 44, 49, 70, 89 and Highway 395.
Forecasters warn that snowfall rates will exceed plowing capabilities at times. Motorists should anticipate long delays and very difficult driving conditions.
Travel is discouraged during the peak snow intensity early Monday. If you must travel prepare for long delays and carry an emergency kit with extra food, water and clothing. If you stay home have a backup plan in case of power outages.
