The National Weather Service is expecting active weather to continue this week with a series of storms moving through northern California. Here’s a rundown on the best times to travel safely for those holiday road trips planned.
According to NWS forecasters this current storm will continue into Tuesday morning, with the heaviest precipitation expected from this afternoon into tonight. This will be a warmer, but wetter, system with snow levels rising above 6,000 feet today and continued travel impacts across the Sierra.
There is a moderate potential for debris flows over Sierra Nevada burn scars and elevated stream flows. We’ve seen evidence of this with several slides in the Feather River Canyon – one of which may keep Highway 70 closed for several days.
A few showers may continue across far northern portions of the state on Wednesday but most places should see a brief break in precipitation.
The next system is fairly quick-moving and will impact the area Thursday through Thursday night (Christmas Eve). This will be a cold system with snow levels down to 2000 – 3000 feet.
Holiday travel will be impacted with chain controls and delays likely over the mountains. Dry weather is expected for most areas on Christmas Day.
