We have some stellar service groups and organizations here in our town – folks who do good work for their members while also contributing to the community as a whole. Susanville’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2381 is a shining example of this, offering services to local veterans, while at the same time contributing financially to other groups throughout the county.
This year the VFW has bestowed $5,377 to a wide range of local groups and causes including large donations to Sober Graduation, Susanville Little League, Lassen Crime Stoppers, Northern California Cancer Advocates, Susanville Police Officer’s Association’s Holiday with a Hero and more. The list is both extensive and impressive.
The VFW has also hosted fundraisers for other organizations, helped pay for scholarship programs, Eagle Scout projects and a relief fund for local veterans.
The prior year VFW donated $7,672.10 to community groups and at their next meeting, according to Post Quartermaster/Adjutant Ronald Wood, the first contributions of 2018 will be approved.
Fundraisers are the primary source of the VFW’s largess according to Post Commander Jim Dandois, “At our breakfast we put out tip jars for the groups that are there that day. We will empty those jars after the last breakfast for the year and cut a check for that group.”
Dandois also explained that many local businesses either donate food or give the VFW a reduced price, which helps make the monthly breakfast fundraisers more profitable.
“We also have written several grants through the VFW and Wal-Mart and we give that money to different groups,” said Dandois.
Bravo to the VFW for setting a great example for all local organizations!
