A great way to enjoy the winter season is by exploring your national forest on snowshoes and the Almanor Ranger District will be hosting guided snowshoe hikes beginning February 2nd.

These tours are offered to the public by reservation only, and spots are limited.

Attendees must be at least eight years of age, and all minors must be accompanied by an adult.

A variety of topics may be covered during the one to two-hour educational program, including basic winter survival skills, environmental education, and local history.

Two programs are currently scheduled, with more to follow as staffing, weather, and conditions allow.

Tours take place in the surrounding Lassen National Forest, but specific locations may vary depending on current snow conditions. These hikes are geared for beginners but can be strenuous depending on terrain and snow powder conditions.

Current 2024 Winter Snowshoe Tour Schedule:
Morgan Summit Snowmobile Area, located on Meadow Lane, off HWY 36, 23 miles NW of Chester, CA, and 0.3 mile from the HWY 89 turnoff to the Lassen Volcanic National Park.

• Friday, February 2, 2024, 9:30 A.M.
• Friday, February 9, 2024, 9:30 A.M.

Attendees can also follow Forest Service personnel to the planned hiking area by meeting at the Almanor Ranger District Front Office by 9:00a.m., the day of the hike.

Snowshoe rentals are available free of charge while supplies last. Please note if you would like to borrow snowshoes when making your reservation.

Cross-country skiers are welcome but must provide their own equipment.

Group reservations for schools and other organizations may be available. Contact the Almanor Ranger District during regular business hours for more information.
