Almanor Ranger District Offering Special Fuel Wood Opportunity

forestserviceupdateLassen National Forest is offering a special fuel wood collection opportunity on the Almanor Ranger District. The public is invited to take firewood gathered on two decks: one near the Almanor Campgrounds along the western shore of the lake, and the other near Gurnsey Creek Campground off Route 89.

Last February’s high wind event blew down trees in Almanor North, Almanor South, and Gurnsey Creek Campgrounds. Shortly after the blow-down, the trees were bucked into log lengths and moved out of the campgrounds to a central location and decked while Forest Service staff prepared for the campground openings.

“We want to provide this opportunity for the public to cut and collect the firewood on the two decks,” said Almanor District Small Sales Officer Tammy Alexander. “This opportunity will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.”

All fuelwood regulations and requirements apply, and a valid wood permit, available at any district ranger station, is required before cutting or collecting firewood from the decks. No standing trees may be felled or removed from the areas around the decks.

For more information, including maps with deck locations, contact the Almanor Ranger District at 530-258-2141.
