Chester Man Arrested by Susanville Police Department

A month long investigation by the Susanville Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation culminated in the arrest of 32 year-old Chester resident Larry Ronald Gorbet Jr. on October 20th, at a residence in Susanville. The Susanville Police Department reports that Gorbet was, “communicating with a minor with the intent to commit a sexual act, and attempting to meet with a minor for the intent to commit a sexual act.”

According to Police Captain Tom Downing, in a release dated today, the investigation started approximately a month ago when the Susanville Police Department learned that Gorbet had been sending text messages to a 13 year-old Susanville girl.  From the conversation in the text messages it appeared that Gorbet was attempting to arrange a meeting with the girl for sexual purposes.

Through their investigation, the Police Department, and the FBI determined that Gorbet would be traveling to Susanville for a meeting with the 13 year-old.  When Gorbet arrived in Susanville and went to the home of the girl, he was subsequently arrested without incident.

Gorbet was booked into the Lassen County Adult Detention Facility on the above charges, and is being held on $50,000 bail. He is currently being held on state charges; however, the case will be reviewed by the U.S. Attorney’s office for possible federal charges sometime next week.

The Susanville Police Department was assisted by the F.B.I. and the Lassen County District Attorney’s Office during the arrest of Gorbet.

“This case is an example of the dangers our children face from predators”, said Susanville Police Chief Jeff Atkinson, “Parents should be vigilant in teaching their children about some of the dangers associated with social media and speak with them about what is and is not acceptable behavior. This was very good work on the part of our Detective that handled the investigation and we appreciate the assistance of the F.B.I., who are always willing to do whatever they can to assist us when called upon.”
