A Susanville man was arrested as the result of a collision on Highway 395 near Long Valley Creek which injured three and in which, according to details released by the California Highway Patrol, the driver’s sobriety was a factor.
At around 5:30p.m. on Friday a man identified by the CHP as 35-year old Susanville resident Richard L. Barton II was driving his 2009 Nissan northbound on Highway 395 in the northbound lane at an unknown, but high rate, of speed.
The 60-year old driver of a 2006 Ford, and her passenger, were simultaneously traveling northbound on the highway in front of the Nissan at between 65 and 70 mph.
“Due to Barton’s state of alcohol intoxication,” the report details. “he failed to realize that the Nissan was rapidly overtaking the Ford.”
Just prior to impact, Barton realized his error and applied his brakes in an attempt to avoid a collision. Despite the last minute braking maneuver the front of his Nissan still struck the rear of the Ford and both vehicles were driven to the northbound shoulder.
Witnesses notified CHP of the collision and emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene.
Both the driver of the Ford and her passenger were transported by ground ambulance to Renown Medical Center.
Barton’s sobriety was evaluated, and according to the CHP, it was determined that he was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage.
He was arrested and transported to Lassen County’s Adult Detention Facility.
