A classic 1964 Buick Electra that was stolen from a locked enclosure on Johnstonville Road early Saturday morning was quickly returned to it’s owner and a Susanville man arrested for the theft according to details released this morning by the Susanville Police Department.
According to Police Chief Tom Downing officers from his department responded to Susanville Towing on Johnstonville Road Saturday morning after receiving a report that sometime between 12:30 and 8:00a.m. someone had entered the secured outside storage yard on the property, cut the lock on the gate, and stolen the 1964 Buick.
While officers were collecting evidence at the scene the owner of Susanville Towing was traveling on Highway 36 near the intersection of Richmond Road and observed the stolen vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. Officers began canvasing the area for the vehicle and a short time later located it in the driveway of 704-475 Richmond Road.
Two individuals were briefly detained and the officer subsequently arrested 41 year-old Susanville resident Matthew Aaron Mathers. The second subject was released without charges.
According to Chief Downing, Mathers was booked into the Lassen County Jail on the charges of vehicle theft, burglary, vandalism and possession of stolen property. He will be held on $20,000 bail pending a court appearance.
The Susanville Police Department was assisted by the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office with the arrest of Mathers. The case has been submitted to the Lassen County District Attorney’s Office for review and prosecution.
