Dark Sky Festival at Lassen Park to Feature Dr. Bateson

2016darkskyThe 5th Annual Dark Sky Festival will be held August 12th through August 14th in Lassen Volcanic National Park and as part of a weekend full of stargazing Susanville resident Dr. Owen Bateson will be conducting a presentation on Astronomy and Planetary Science and Astronomical Speeds in the Loomis Auditorium at Manzanita Lake on Friday.

Bateson’s event begins at noon with solar telescopes set up during the afternoon. Regular telescopes will be set up near the Manzanita Lake campground from dark until 11:00p.m.

Throughout the park rangers, astronomers, and planetary geologists will be celebrating all that is out of this world during the Dark Sky Festival. Special programs, presentations, hikes, and Junior Ranger Night Explorer activities will be offered.

The three-day festival will include nightly constellation tours and stargazing along with astronomy activities, discussions and demonstrations by National Park Dark Sky rangers, NASA, International Dark Sky Association, RECON, Astronomical Society of Nevada and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.
